Tip of the Spear

By Jack Spear (Dillion Dilligaf)

Volume 2, Edition 6 (3/15/2023)

The middle of March already and it's Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!! The year is flying by at a fast pace.

This edition of Tip of the Spear will be dedicated to a subject very important to me… colorectal cancer. As many of you know, my lovely, incredible, beautiful wife Jane was taken from us by this unforgiving disease 6 years ago. She was my life partner and other half for 44 years.

You see, she, as most people do, did not think she needed cancer screening and never got a test. She had been healthy all of her life and never suspected anything that serous could happen to her. So, when she was finally diagnosed the cancer was stage IV, and sadly the mortality rate then was very low.

So I thought I would share some facts about colorectal cancer from the American Cancer Society. Colorectal Cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. In 2023 approximately 153,000 people will be diagnosed with CRC, 52,500 will die. Since Jane’s passing this was a wake up call for me, I get screened regularly.

Here is the link to the entire article:

https://acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.3322/caac.21772

My tip for you…. I want YOU to schedule a screening immediately. Check with your Dr. and do it soon. Leave a comment on the site when you have done so. NO excuses. Don’t make me find you and tell you bad jokes. LOL

Onto a lighter note, did anyone watch the Oscars this past Sunday? Luckily, no one got smacked this go round, sheesh...

Until next edition, stay healthy, and love everyone around you!!! I hope you are enjoying these tips. Drop me a line and let me know.

Volume 2, Edition 5 (3/1/2023)

March 1st!!!! ¼ of the year is almost done. March is also a month of celebration, with holidays such as St. Patrick's Day and International Women's Day. Will you be celebrating? Oh yea, annndddd Daylight Savings start this month. I can feel the Spring fever in full affect!

Today is a rather bittersweet day for me. Today is Jane's, my incredible partner of 44 years, birthday. She would have been 66. Today is sad because she is gone, taken way to early. It is also bittersweet, as I was lucky enough to have known her and grew with her.

We met in high school and soon decided that we would spend the rest of our lives together. Today I am remembering all of the things we did and accomplished together. We built a GREAT life together, had two amazing sons, traveled throughout the

United States and the world.

It has been nearly 6 years since her death but EVERYDAY I think of her and

of something we did for family, friends, or strangers. I do not feel depressed or angry by her loss. I do live everyday knowing that we will meet again. And, I know she is looking down on me with pride that I haven’t burned down the house or lost any of our 3 cats.

My tip for you…. I want you to think of someone you lost who you loved very much. Think of something fun you all did. You cannot change what happened, but you can manage how you manage your grief. YOU are the master of your destiny, the Captain of your own ship. How you navigate life without that special someone is totally up to you!!!!

This is going to be a one tip only edition. My goal was to make this a special edition, remembering that special person. I hope you will do that as well.

Well that’s it for this edition of Tip of the Spear. I hope you are enjoying these tips. Drop me a line and let me know.

Volume 2, Edition 4 (2/15/2023)

February 15th and love is in the air! I hope everyone enjoyed Valentine's Day with their favorite person. There are a lot of singles out there and sometimes V-Day can feel a little lonely, but it doesn't have to be. Practice self-love by indulging in things that make YOU happy, such as a spa day or favorite meal. Remember that love comes in many forms and that being single is an opportunity to appreciate and cultivate other types of love in your life!

Welp, tax deadline is two months away. I have actually made a big effort in getting ready. Most of the documents I need are neatly in a file on my desk. Just awaiting a couple of more tidbits of info and I will be ready to send to my tax guy. As I wrote earlier this is a big deal for me, usually, I have to file an extension. NOT this year.

My tip for you…. This is your official reminder!! Taxes wait for no one. Don’t give them tax people any reason to come a knockin’

This year I plan to do some traveling. For a couple of reasons.. one, I haven’t been able to go on any recreational trips for the last two years. Secondly, there are some places I have visited that I would really like to go see again. Niagara Falls, Washington D.C., and the New Orleans Military Museum are on the top of my list. Also, visiting relatives I haven’t seen in awhile.

My Tip for you…. If you can do it… get out there. America is a beautiful place, full of richness and amazing things to see. Even if you cannot get away from work or other obligations, short trips are very therapeutic. You will be surprised at how rejuvenating it will be.

Well that’s it for this edition of Tip of the Spear. I hope you are enjoying these tips. Drop me a line and let me know.

Volume 2, Edition 3 (2/1/2023)

Holy cow it is February already. I cannot believe how fast this year is going. Compared to the last couple of years this is a whirlwind!!!!

I apologize for this edition being late. I have been very very busy with a couple of projects I have been working on. More to follow later.

Recently I learned that I have an internet troll on my hands….imagine that. This person has decided that I should be the target of insults, defamation, and intimidation. It doesn't bother me that this person dislikes my comedy but what does bother me is the insults made toward people with disabilities. Also making up false allegations and spewing hate.

Not sure what I am going to do about it. Should I confront this person or ignore? That is the question. This person literally has never had a real conversation with me, and non of what this person is saying is true. Still, I don't want false info being spread about me...

If I confront them, a big verbal battle will ensue, which only add more fuel to the fire. Ignoring them seems best at this time. So, ignore I will. The reason I share this story with you is I am certain that at some point in your life you have been the victim of someone like this. How you respond to it is a learning experience.

My tip for you…. Don’t waste time or energy letting haters get to you. You are a bigger person. People that know you know what kind of person you are and false allegations are just that….FALSE. People that get joy out of these antics soon lose interest if ignored. So, ignore haters!!!!

Well that’s it for this edition...short and sweet. I hope you are enjoying these tips.

Drop me a line and let me know.

Tip of the Spear

By Jack Spear (Dillion Dilligaf)

Volume 2, Edition 2 (1/15/2023)

2023 has started! I am excited about what's to come this new year! Did you know we will be having our first comedy show of the year this month January 28th here in Las Vegas, NV at the Charleston Heights Arts Center! Ticket info will be listed at the end of this post.

As I have written earlier, I don’t make new year resolutions, instead I set objectives and goals to achieve during the year. This year one of those is to reach out to long lost friends.

A couple of days ago while cleaning up my online contacts list I discovered a friend that I hadn’t talked to for several years. An email was sent and sure enough a response was received. That person was wondering the same thing, how can you lose contact with friends. We have exchanged several emails and spoken by phone. What a great time!

My tip for you…. If you take some time and look through your contacts list, or Christmas card list who knows, you too may find an old name that you would like to reconnect with.

You may or may not know that prior to Jane’s passing we loved to cruise. In fact, we were fortunate enough to go on 55 cruises. Some cruises as short as 3 days to our longest of 48 days. Yep 48 days on a boat travelling from LA to New York City via Cape Horn. Since her passing I have been on only 2 cruises.

Jane and I thoroughly enjoyed cruising. You only have to unpack your stuff once and you get to see amazing sights and meet incredible people. Some of those folks have become friends whose friendships have lasted for years. I miss cruising, so, this year, I got the itch to get back out there on the high seas. What about you? Ever been on a cruise?

My tip for you…. Cruising may not be your thing. That’s OK. I am sure there is something you haven’t done in quite awhile. Think about it and get out there and do it. In fact, if you would like to go cruising let me know, maybe we can work out a trip together.

Volume 2, Edition 1 (1/1/2023)

Well, we made it!! 2022 is in the history books. Looking back, for the most part, I am glad 2022 is behind us. There were many ups and downs for all of us. Hopefully, you like me, survived and excited about the New Year.

As I wrote before I am NOT making any New Year’s Resolutions, instead, I am setting goals and objectives to work towards. The first one that comes to mind is the always dreaded Income taxes. I set a goal to not file for an extension and get them done on time. As captain of the procrastinators club I always put it off till the last minute. Which causes a lot of stress and anxiety.

My tip for you…. Start gathering your tax information now. You don’t have to do it all at once. Take it a bite at a time. You will be surprised at how easy it really is.

I have never really been an outside the box kinda guy. I like knowing what I am doing and working in my comfort zone. Last year I had the opportunity to experience a WAY outside the box event. I’ve never thought of myself as an actor or had any ambitions to work in movies. Sure, I had done some extra and background work, but only at a small level. The leading role in a full length motion picture was offered to me and I accepted.

OUTSIDE THE BOX is all I can say. It was hard work. Made harder by the fact I had

no real experience or background. Before I accepted the offer my thoughts were, heck, this is something different than anything else I had ever done. How exciting, I thought, to really get out of my comfort zone. It turned out to be one of the most incredible things I’ve done. The movie is complete and will be released early next year.

My tip for you…. This year, try something outside of your comfort zone. Here are some examples that come to mind.. If you’ve ever gone to a comedy show and said to yourself, I am funnier than those guys, find an open mic show in your local community and try it out. If you have never been good in the kitchen, sign up for a cooking class. Or, if skydiving is something outside your box… GO DO IT !!

Well that’s it for the first edition of volume 2 Tip of the Spear. I hope you are enjoying these tips. Drop me a line and let me know.

Volume 1, Edition 8 (12/15/2022)

The end of 2022 is near!! I cannot believe how fast this year went. Seems like we just celebrated a new year… as if it was only a week ago. I am preparing for the new year by planning a couple of thing.

First is The Blue Zone Comedy Tour… I have been promoting and passing out flyers for the show which provides a platform for comedians with disabilities. Afterall, FUNNY is FUNNY right? So if you are local Vegas make sure you go ahead and grab tickets! See the calendar for all the show details.

The second thing I am planning for the new year is NOT to make any resolutions!! Instead, I am setting goals and objectives. It seems to me that every time I make a resolution it is too easy to let it slip, usually by the end of January. What about you? Any resolutions/goals that are on your to do list?

My tip for you….

Think of one or two things you would like to accomplish in 2023… maybe lose some weight, save some money, go on a trip, stop some crazy habit you have, then set a realistic goal for accomplishing it. There is no rush, just make progress at a doable pace. You will be surprised at how easy it will be.

I know…this is a short edition. Not to worry, I have lot’s to share with you in the new year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF MY FAMILY, FRIENDS AND FOLLOWERS. I appreciate all of your support !!!!

Volume 1, Edition 7 (12/1/2022)

I hope your Thanksgiving was great and you got to spend time with friends and family, especially family. I had plans to travel to Northern California to celebrate with my son and his family. Unfortunately, I had a small fender bender and was unable to make the trip. Luckily there were no injuries, just damage to my car. Good news is I will be rescheduling my visit for Christmas.. I have told them yet, so don’t spoil the surprise.

Last month was a busy time for me. I’d always been told that I had a great “Radio Voice”. In the back of my mind I thought I should look into voice acting. I enrolled in a voice acting class through the local university. The class met once a week for 4 weeks, 3 hours per night. Voice acting is not easy! I did not realize how much time and energy is required to hone your skill.

I thought you could just show up and read some lines and you would be a voice actor. NOPE, quite the opposite. There are so many details, from taking care of your voice, to setting up a studio booth, to marketing yourself. Then you have to figure out what type of genre you want to pursue, animation, audio books, commercials, instructional media,…etc. I learned much from this class and am glad I finally had the opportunity to explore this world. I will definitely do more when I find time.

My tip for you….  If there is something that you have wanted to try, a hobby, a new vocation, any new idea… DO IT. I was always thinking that I should get into radio or voice acting but just kept it in the back of the to do list. I am so glad that an opportunity came along to allow me to explore this amazing and fun field.

The past couple of months I have made a special point of reaching out to family and friends that I had been too busy to stay in touch with. Well to my surprise everyone is amazing and doing incredible things. Just one example, I have a niece who lives in Northern California who I had not communicated with for a long time. We reconnected and she is doing incredible things. She has just started a new career in real estate and her business is booming! She has two grandchildren and is living a full life..

My Tip for you…. Don’t be like me and let too much time pass. If there are people in your contact list or address book that you have not communicated with for a long time. Reach out to them, catch up on what’s happening in each other’s lives and enjoy the experience!!

BONUS tip for you….  Less than a month away. GET THEM CHRISTMAS CARDS IN THE MAIL. Mine goes out early next week.

Tip of the Spear

Volume 1, Edition 6 (11/15/2022)

The middle of November already. Anyone else still adjusting to daylight savings?

As I was sitting here pondering what to talk about I thought I’d reflect on friends. You see, friends are a very valuable and important part of our lives. There are different levels of friends. The first I call acquaintances, folks you talk to occasionally and maybe share an experience from time to time.

Then there are friends you see often, have great times together and are supportive to your growth and vice versa. Lastly, and most important to me, are true friends. Those are the friends that not only will bail you out of jail, but will serve time with you! Lol. Ok, ok I’m kidding on that jail talk but you understand what I mean.

This is the kind of  friendship that needs to be nurtured and cultivated, by both parties. It takes work, collaboration, and commitment. If one side of the friendship is hurt or offended by something they perceive occurred then it is paramount that a discussion about the issue be had. A civil and respectful conversation, if done well, will result in discoveries by both sides which may not have been visible before.

You also need to be aware that in some cases it is not your fault, don’t beat yourself up over someone else’s issues. If you have made an honest attempt to correct mis-conceptions and it doesn’t work. Let it go, if there is truly a friendship it will endure.

My tip for you…  friendships are a staple of life. Protect them, respect them, have fun with them. They can be fragile at times.

The holidays are approaching faster than the speed of sound and can be hectic and stressful. I am trying to get ahead by planning and setting goals on what needs to be accomplished to avoid burnout. Christmas cards, shopping for the right gifts, mailing/delivering them, holiday social events, on and on.

What about old and new traditions? This year I made an “Old Year’s Resolution”. In tribute to 2022 I have listed out all of the things that need to be done and when I should have them done. Unlike New Year’s Resolutions that never last… My Old Year’s Resolution has a better chance of survival!! How about you? What are some of your traditions you celebrate during the holidays?

My Tip for you…. Get ahead of all the things that need to be accomplished for the Holidays. Then sit back and enjoy your time with  family and friends

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s are coming FAST. Mariah is almost unthawed!!! Get prepared mentally and physically. It is going to be a GREAT holiday season and it is the most wonderful time of the year!

That’s it for the edition.

Volume 1, Edition 5 (11/01/2022)

November 1st …. WOW!!! Time flies when you are having fun. October was a great month. Dilligaf had several gigs, including headlining at Medina’s Bar and Grill. Which, by the way, has outstanding Mediterranean food, especially their Kabob’s!!!! With my manager/partner Tim, we performed at several open mic’s. For those that don’t know what an open mic is, it is an unpaid opportunity to get up on stage and practice new material that you will add to your paid gig’s. It is a lot of fun. We ended the month with a Red Carpet event called Halloween Madness. A charity event held at Madame Tussauds in Hollywood benefiting St Jude’s Hospital for Children. A special night for all. I will post pictures when I get them.

My tip for you….  I rambled on above just to remind you that staying out there, having fun, and engaging in something that makes you happy is a fantastic way to spend your valuable time. Laughing, joking and having fun with friends and new people you meet is invaluable.

You know that old saying “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression”? Thought I would share an example. Earlier this month a friend referred me to a public relations firm to represent Dilligaf. I spoke with their CEO/President, who seemed like an incredibly nice person. I felt very comfortable with him and what he had planned for PR efforts. As he had been recommended by a friend I did not do the due diligence I should have. Sure enough after a few days of hype, smoke and mirrors, and inflated assurances I did some internet research (what did we ever do before Google), sure enough that first impression was a total house of cards. Severing the relationship is turning out to be a daunting task.

My Tip for you…. There are 2 tips here. First, be yourself from the very beginning. Don’t try to over impress people. If you are false or fake, it won’t take long to uncover the real you. Causing friction and drama that you do not need. The other is vet new people, especially if you plan on having a business relationship. Go that extra step and look at who they are and what others have shared.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s is coming FAST. Get prepared mentally and physically. It is going to be a GREAT holiday season!

That’s it for the edition.

Volume 1, Edition 4 (10/15/2022)

Holy crap, it’s the middle of October already! This year has really flown by!!

I’ve been very busy for the past few weeks with comedy shows, movie details and negotiations for distribution of my new movie, “Hell’s Coming For You,” (make sure to check out the trailer on the homepage), and just busy with life in general, know what I mean? What an incredible journey this process has been! Two years ago I would not have even given it a thought of being in a movie, let alone starring as the leading role.

A movie? Who would have ever thought, sure I’ve done some work as an extra but to perform in a full length movie was way outside my thought process. However, for those of you who know me know that I always take on challenges and overcome them. I am a comedian and that has been my focus, but that little guy inside me said go for it. I did and viola a movie was made! As I have said many times, this is probably the most challenging task I have ever faced. The final product IS worth every minute of effort.

My tip for you…. Don’t ever pass up an opportunity to take advantage of anything that is offered to you…no matter how outside of your wheelhouse it may seem. Grab ahold of it, commit to it, and make the most of it. You WILL NOT be sorry.  Try it, and let me know how it worked for you.

Family and friends are my most valuable possession. Without family and friends you just exist. You don’t want to just exist, you want to flourish. Recently I reconnected with a long lost relative. She is the daughter of a brother who frankly was a terrible person. We broke off communications about 20 years ago. His part of the family hadn’t communicated either.  Unfortunately, the brother passed earlier this year and she called to just let me know. We had a GREAT long conversation and mended some broken fences. It was a blast catching up on each other’s lives. I predict that we’ll share many more conversations, and meet in person in the future. Let the good times roll!!

My Tip for you…. I rambled on with that story just to say this, at the end of the day FAMILY (and friends) is the most important thing there is in life. So, if there are relatives, or even friends that you’re not happy with, bury the hatchet. Reach out to them and rekindle those relationships. YOU WILL THANK ME FOR THIS TIP!!

That’s it for the edition!!!

Volume 1, Edition 3 (10/01/2022)

It’s October already, sheesh… Where did the year go? Since my last post, I had a comedy show in early September, which turned out great! It was the premiere of the BLUE ZONE COMEDY TOUR. Me and 3 other disabled comedians took the stage for a night of laughs and fun. This was a long process but tenacity won.

The show obtained a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts (pretty good sponsor). The show was a dream and goal of mine for years and finally came through. I did not give up on the idea and kept working at it until all of the details fell in place. It was a successful show and as a result they have asked us to do another show on January 28, 2023. If you are in Las Vegas then come out and see us.

Also, the holidays are right around the corner. A time for family, fun and love. However, for some, it can also be a very stressful time of year. With cooking for the holidays and buying presents for loved ones can be both rewarding and a pain in the a*s. For me, the holidays are a time of remembrance. My life partner, Jane, passed away 6 years ago. Since then the holidays have not been the same for me.

Jane was the family rock. She organized EVERYTHING. She took joy in making sure that everyone’s holiday was perfect. For 44 years she and I celebrated with family, usually at our house. While I could be sad and depressed that the holidays are not the same, I choose to look at the positive and remember the past with fondness.

My tip for you…. Do not let negativity take control of your life. It may seem like an overwhelming challenge but stay POSITIVE. Show your family and friends all the love you can. You never know when one of those you love can be taken from you.

Here’s a bonus tip for you…. If you have a dream, if there is something you have always wanted to do. DO IT!!! Don’t let up, stay consistent, stay true to the goal and I promise …. IT WILL HAPPEN.

That’s it for this edition!!!

Volume 1, Edition 2 (9/15/2022)

Summer is nearly over, can you believe it? This often comes with the realization that the holiday season is FAST approaching. For some, this  may bring feelings of joy, happiness, sadness, and fear. For me it comes with both sadness and joy. Sadness of the fact that my love and lifetime partner of 44 years is not going to be here to celebrate with me, yet another holiday season.

It has been 6 years since her passing…I miss her. However, I also have feelings of great  joy during the holiday season. Joy in knowing that she and I made so many wonderful memories traveling the world. Not to mention, I have an incredible family, lots of good friends, as well as many good things happening in my life currently! (Keep reading to find out more about that).

TIP OF THE SPEAR….. You may also have several feelings during this time of year. Whatever feelings you may have, recognize them and address them head-on. For example, if you feel fear, identify what that fear is, where that fear came from, and why/how it affects you. Then, once understood, you should develop a plan or strategy to overcome it. It probably won’t be easy facing your fear head on, but the result will be amazing.

TIP OF THE SPEAR.. Embrace your family and friends. Make time for them. Express to them how much you love them. Reach out to those you have not seen or spoken to in awhile. If you can call them up, but if that is not possible send them an email, card, or text. You will be surprised at how good it will make you feel. Furthermore this will also make your loved ones feel appreciated.

TIP OF THE SPEAR… In YOUR life you will be presented with challenges. Either big or small. Never be intimidated or afraid to accept them. Challenges are opportunities to grow, learn new things, and, most importantly, learn about yourself.

My movie Hell’s Coming For You has completed post production and is ready to begin the process of negotiating distribution. It has been a long journey with many ups and downs. For me, a monumental task to undertake. There were several times that I wanted to give up, as the demands of learning to act, memorizing dialogue, learning about the movie making process, and the overall production were daunting. I stood up to the challenge and dove in!!! Stay tuned for updates on when and where you can see this incredible movie.

So friends, again I say to you, do not EVER let someone tell you that you cannot do something. The only person who can keep you from succeeding is YOU. Set your sights high… Then achieve them.

Don’t forget to add your email to our email list for upcoming shows/updates.

Send me an email (dilliondilligaf@gmail.com) with your thoughts or comments.

Till next edition.

 Volume 1, Edition 1 (6/01/2022)

With the launch of the new website for my alter ego comedian persona (Dillion Dilligaf) comes the inaugural edition of ‘TIP OF THE SPEAR’.

Tip of the Spear will be humorous, serious, poignant, irrelevant, eclectic, over the top, on point, etc. On a regular basis, at least twice monthly,  I will bring you information, and tips, useful or useless, which you can use in your everyday life. Or, perhaps you will just be entertained by reading it. However you use it, it is up to you.

With the introduction out of the way, let’s delve into this editions Tips.

A big part of the last few months has been the writing, executive producing, and performing the lead role in a film titled: HELL’S COMING FOR YOU’ . This was an incredible experience for me, as never performed in a leading role before, never mind writing and Executive Producing a film. You can keep up with the current progress of the movie at https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15558212/ I am very excited for the release very soon.

My tip for you… watch the movie teaser. Follow the progress, and prepare to be very entertained.

I live in the greatest city in the world, Las Vegas. Any type of entertainment you desire is here. From  symphony concerts to strip clubs, everything in between can be enjoyed. One of my favorite places is Fremont Street Experience. Watching people and the myriad of street performers is fantastic. My friend and partner, Tim (he co-wrote Hell’s Coming for You) often hangs around there watching people and chatting them up… you never know who you’ll find !!!

My tip for you… visit Fremont Street for a helluva good time.

Last tip for this edition—NEVER NEVER NEVER let anyone tell you, you cannot do something. If it is important to you and you want it to happen… then MAKE IT HAPPEN. One of the main purposes I had for doing the movie was to be an inspiration to other folks with disabilities. To influence their self confidence by showing them that anything is achievable. Don’t take NO for an answer.

My tip for you… MAKE IT HAPPEN—JUST DO IT
